Shreepada R. Rao

In a world chasing overnight fame and flashy success, there’s a rare breed of individuals who build legacies brick by brick — with patience, purpose, and passion. One such quiet storm in India’s martial arts scene is Master Shreepada R. Rao, a name that commands respect across the dojangs (training halls) of Karnataka and beyond.

But to understand the man behind the medals, you need to travel back to his roots — to the quaint yet culturally rich town of Puttur, Dakshina Kannada, where it all began.

The Humble Beginnings of a Fighter

Shreepada R. Rao’s early martial arts journey reads like a saga of persistence. From Karate (Shito Ryu and Shotokan styles) to finally discovering his deep resonance with Taekwondo, he was never content with mere participation — he mastered every form he explored. Under the guidance of Master Subhash Yadav, he carved his niche in the discipline that would become his lifelong devotion.

What set him apart? It wasn’t just his fighting spirit — it was his vision to use Taekwondo as a life-changing tool for India’s youth.

Rao’s Yuva Academy: More Than Just Kicks and Punches

Founded in 2012, Rao’s Yuva Academy in Belagavi is no ordinary martial arts school. It’s an institution built on values — discipline, respect, perseverance — and has trained over 1,200+ students, many of whom are now national-level champions.

Under Master Rao’s leadership, the academy became ISO-certified and officially recognized by the Taekwondo Federation of India — a rare feat for a grassroots academy from a semi-urban town.

But here’s the real highlight: He ensured accessibility, often waiving fees for economically disadvantaged students, providing free gear, and even arranging nutritional support for young athletes.

Leadership That Inspires Systems

Beyond training, Master Rao has become a systemic force in Karnataka’s Taekwondo ecosystem:

  • He has served as a technical committee member in multiple state championships.

  • Introduced digital scoring systems for fair judging.

  • Trained referees and scorers across districts.

  • Directed tournaments like the DASARA CM Cup and Rani Channamma Games.

His work has professionalized local-level Taekwondo, turning Karnataka into a model state for structured martial arts development.

An Educator with Global Credentials

Even with a full-time government job, Rao continues to pursue knowledge. Currently, he is pursuing a Ph.D. in Sports Administration & Management from East Bridge University, Paris. His academic inclination is evident in his efforts to integrate Taekwondo into Rani Channamma University’s curriculum, making martial arts part of mainstream education.

His seminars on sports psychology, fitness, and injury management are now shaping the next generation of coaches and referees in South India.

Awards, Accolades & A Legacy of Service

The awards are plenty — from the International Icon Award, World Sports Star Award, and recognition by the Martial Arts Hall of Fame USA, to his recent title as Best Coach in Karnataka (2024). But Master Rao remains grounded, always crediting his students, mentors, and community.

He also heads the Yakshit Yuva Foundation, which runs awareness programs, self-defense camps for girls, and rural outreach initiatives — proving that his mission extends far beyond the mats.

Final Word: More Than a Master

In an era defined by flash but short on substance, Master Shreepada R. Rao represents everything that’s still good, still pure, and still powerful about grassroots sports in India.

He isn’t just a martial artist.
He’s a mentor, a policymaker, a guide, and a changemaker.

And his journey — still unfolding — continues to inspire the next generation to rise not just as fighters, but as better humans.
